The following guidelines and geographic restrictions are new as of August 2008.
The W.M. Keck Foundation has a long tradition of support for distinctive undergraduate training across the disciplines of the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and engineering. Formerly supporting two programs in these areas, the Foundation recently formed one comprehensive program with a continuing emphasis on excellence and innovation. The goals of the Undergraduate Education Program are to:
Foster new levels of student engagement and understanding, especially through active learning and collaborative curriculum development |
Expand interdisciplinary activities in balance with needs of each discipline |
Incorporate research activities into the curriculum and raise the bar of expectations regarding publications and presentations by undergraduates |
Enhance science and technology literacy for students in all disciplines |
Develop new ways to stimulate critical thinking and other core competencies of a liberal arts education |
Colleges and universities, particularly at private, predominantly undergraduate institutions, may submit requests only if located in Foundation designated states. Organizations that address undergraduate needs at the national level are also eligible. Public institutions and research universities located in the designated states may apply to the Undergraduate Education Program but must demonstrate a compelling or unique resource to be competitive. Grants range from $200,000 to $1 million, and most typically are in the $200,000 to $500,000 range. On a case by case basis, the Foundation may consider the award of smaller seed grants for planning and piloting.
